Gered Mankowitz was born on the 3rd August 1946 in London, England. Gered left school at age 15, completing his education without any formal qualifications. Having a keen interest in photography (inspired by actor Peter Sellers) as well as a natural ‘eye’ for the medium, Gered began an apprenticeship at legendary photographer Tom Blau’s photo agency, Camera Pres Ltd. Gered began taking photographs professionally in 1962. He is famous for his photographs of the rock music scene over the last 40 years. Gered's portraits of the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix, amongst others, are part of the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
