Rembrandt Drawing at a Window
Etching with drypoint and engraving
Size: 196 x 168 mm
This was Rembrandts first self-portrait since 1639 and marks the beginning of a series of self-portraits which continued to
the end of his life. He frequently used himself as a model in
his etchings, sometimes dressing himself up in Oriental
costume, elaborate Renaissance dress, or even as a beggar. He kept in his studio various props - hats, plumes and other
elaborate
accessories to use to this end. In this etching Rembrandt
identifies
himself
as
an
artist
rather
than
a
gentleman.
