Jan Asselyn, The Painter by Rembrandt

Jan Asselyn, The Painter

Etching with drypoint and engraving

Size: 188 x 170 mm

Jan Asselyn was a landscape painter who spent most of his working life in Rome. Because of a deformed hand he was given the nickname 'Krabbetje', which means little crab. This portrait skilfully conceals the hand with a lace cuff. Asselyn returned to Amsterdam in 1675, marrying the sister of Ferdinand Bol, one of Rembrandt's former pupils. His brother Thomas acted as a witness on Rembrandt's behalf.
