Vasili Smirnov, b. 1975, St Petersburg Smirnov graduated in 2001 from the Academy of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg and was the only graduate in his year to qualify with 'Exceptional Distinction'. An artist of diverse abilities, Smirnov displays a relaxed, painterly style with Old Gatchina and Vladimirskaya Cathedral and a tighter, more precise handling as seen in The Pavilion Hall. His paintings (including exquisite examples of 'trompe l'oeil') hang in private collections in the USA, Canada, France, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Japan and the UK. He has exhibited in Hamburg (1998), Helsinki (1999), at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg (1998, 1999 and 2000) and in London (Lukeart 2003). Smirnov has become a noted painter of houses and interiors as well as an acclaimed copiest of Old Master paintings.
